Scout Motors has provided an update on the construction of its new electric vehicle production center.
Scout Motors unveiled its plans for the new factory in South Carolina in 2023. The site spans 1,100 acres and is located about 20 minutes northeast of Columbia, South Carolina. This $2-billion investment aims to create over 4,000 permanent jobs. At peak capacity, the company reports that they plan to produce 200,000 vehicles a year at the Production Center – approximately 40 per hour.
The new Scout vehicles will be built on a newly designed body-on-frame electric vehicle platform. The Production Center’s main structures include a body shop, paint shop, and final assembly buildings. Additionally, there will be a state-of-the-art training center for employees and a technology center to support future vehicles.
**July 2024 Update**
Significant progress has been made with the first roof decking sections starting installation last month. Progress continued on steel construction; however, the body shop was yet to go vertical with steel until this month when it saw its first steel erection begin along with roof decking commencement on both the paint shop and assembly building. Crews have moved more than 8 million cubic yards of dirt while continuing grading and infrastructure improvements.
Approximately 26% of the steel has been installed so far in the main assembly building – up from last month’s figure of 10%. Assembly building foundations are now up to 63% installed. When completed, this building will span nearly 1.3 million square feet.
The paint shop continues progressing with further steel construction alongside initial roof decking installations. Future equipment required for operations has started arriving onsite due to size constraints necessitating early integration into current structures.
In terms of developments within the body shop sector:
+ First instances of steel construction began this past month.
+ A brisk pace resulted in erecting around15%of the total planned steeling already.
+ Foundations reached an installation rate nearing 39%.
