CATL has announced the launch of the Freevoy Super Hybrid Battery, a hybrid vehicle battery that reportedly achieves a pure electric range of over 400 kilometers and features 4C superfast charging.
The batteries will be used in EREVs (extended-range electric vehicles) and PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles).
CATL says that as EREVs and PHEVs gain traction in the new energy vehicle market, consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with the pure electric performance of these vehicles, citing issues such as short range, slow charging, and poor low-temperature performance. They’ve also mentioned the Freevoy Super Hybrid Battery gets over 280 kilometers of range with just 10 minutes of charging.
The Freevoy incorporates advanced surface modification technology for the cathode material and an innovative high-voltage electrolyte formulation, creating a nano protective layer that minimizes side reactions within the active layer. The integration of high-activity, excited-state particles into the cathode material enhances lithium ion transport efficiency. Supported by CATL’s SOC full-scene high-precision model and upgraded BMS intelligent algorithm and hardware, the SOC control accuracy of Freevoy has reportedly increased by 40%, with an overall pure electric utilization rate improvement of more than 10%, achieving a pure electric range of over 400km.
CATL has also applied its 4C ultra-fast charging technology to the Freevoy, achieving over 280 kilometers of range on 10 minutes of charging. This is facilitated by cathode fast ion conductor coating technology, second-generation fast-charging graphite, novel nano-coating technologies for the anode, multi-gradient layered electrode design, and a new ultra-high conductivity electrolyte formulation.
The Freevoy incorporates CATL’s sodium-ion battery technology, overcoming low-temperature limitations of new energy vehicles. It achieves discharge capability in extreme cold environments down to -40 degrees Celsius, charging capability down to -30 degrees Celsius, and maintains a seamless driving experience down to -20 degrees Celsius.
To enhance low-temperature performance, CATL has implemented three key technological innovations centered around sodium-ion battery technology. These include the AB battery system integration technology, using sodium-ion batteries as a SOC benchmark, and developing full temperature range accurate BMS technology for targeted zonal management of distinct chemical systems.
The Freevoy’s performance is supported by a comprehensive reliability management and evaluation system, encompassing material selection, molecular design, multi-level protection structures, extreme manufacturing processes, comprehensive testing and validation, and big data-driven early warning mechanisms.
The Freevoy has already been implemented in various models from brands such as Li Auto, AVATR, DEEPAL, CHANGAN NEVO, and NETA. By 2025, 30 hybrid vehicle models from brands including Geely, Chery, GAC, and VOYAH, equipped with CATL’s Freevoy, are scheduled for launch and delivery.
