Vitesco Technologies is preparing for the series application of its High Voltage Box. This modular system integrates several functions into one unit, making charging, converting, and distributing electricity in electric vehicles more economical.

Depending on the design, the High Voltage Box includes the vehicle On-Board Charger for AC charging on the grid with up to 22 kW of charging power, a DC current converter providing the current for the 12 V vehicle net, and power electronics which distribute high voltage power in the vehicle and facilitate fast DC-charging with up to 800 V.

The High Voltage Box, due to its high level of mechatronic integration, requires less space in the vehicle while increasing the total system reliability compared to individual devices. The use of state-of-the-art silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors enhances charging efficiency to over 95 percent, reducing the vehicle owner’s electricity bill. This efficiency level is particularly beneficial for car owners as electric vehicles are frequently charged on the grid. The High Voltage Box can charge the car with 200 km of range in under two hours due to the high AC charging rate of up to 22 kW. DC high-power charging with up to 800 V achieves the same range in 12 minutes. The sophisticated power electronics ensure that this system offers electrical safety as well as efficiency.

The High Voltage Box simplifies the process by covering two or more functions with a single device. SiC technology is used to minimize the conversion losses of the unit. The modular design supports all relevant European and worldwide grid topologies, making it adaptable for the global market. Vitesco Technologies is also advancing new functions. The High Voltage Box for one of the two series applications will already function bidirectionally, allowing it to supply alternating current with 230 V from the DC battery current when required. This feature enables vehicle owners to use their large battery in versatile ways, such as powering tools far from the grid or feeding electricity back into the grid from their own photovoltaic system.
