NIO rolls out first mass-produced 150 kWh semi-solid battery pack

NIO has initiated mass production of its first semi-solid battery pack. This pack, which boasts an energy density of 260 Wh/kg, will soon be available as part of Nio’s battery swap service, offering a driving range of up to 1,055 km.

The 150-kWh semi-solid battery (SSB) was designed by WeLion New Energy Technology, a Beijing-based battery maker and Nio’s battery cell supplier. The SSB cells have an energy density of 360 Wh/kg, while the entire pack has a density of 260 Wh/kg. The pack also features a cooling system that is six times stronger than those found in ordinary batteries. Despite its high capacity, the 150 kWh SSB weighs only 676 kg, just 20 kg more than Nio’s 100 kWh battery pack. This is significantly lighter than the 135.5 kWh LFP battery from BYD, which weighs 903 kg.

Although Nio has not disclosed the exact launch date for the 150 kWh SSB, the company has hinted on social media that it will be available at Nio’s Power Swap Stations (PPS) in a few months, with the official launch scheduled for the second quarter of this year.

Founded in 2014, Nio primarily offers two battery options for its high-end electric cars: 75 kWh and 100 kWh. Customers also have the option to purchase a vehicle without a battery and instead opt for a battery-as-a-service subscription with a monthly payment. Soon, Nio will introduce a third battery option with a capacity of 150 kWh, designed for long trips. This battery will only be available via subscription.

Nio co-founder and CEO William Li previously tested the Nio ET7 sedan equipped with the 150-kWh semi-solid battery. He managed to drive 1,044 km on a single charge with 3% battery capacity remaining. During the test event, Li revealed that the battery had previously been tested on a route from Kunming to Beihai, covering a distance of 1,145 km on a single charge. This is a record for a mass-produced electric vehicle.
