LEONI has launched LIMEVERSE, a new 100% recyclable EV cable product line.
The highlight is the insulation material which uses bio-based materials from sustainable and/or renewable raw materials instead of crude oil – verifiable using biocarbon in the ASTM D6866 standard test method.
In addition, they use mass-balanced plastics, where petroleum-based raw materials have been partially replaced by bio-based alternatives during synthesis in chemical reactors. The result is reported to be about a 50% lower CO2 footprint when compared to traditional cable materials, and they mention it does not sacrifice reliability or performance.
The company mentions that the cables cover a wide range of applications from single-core vehicle cables, multi-core sensor cables, coaxial/data transmission, charging cables, and extruded flat cables. Beyond PVC compounds, the product line also includes polypropylene – PP – and TPE-U, which they say resists temperatures up to 125 °C with no issues.
Leoni reports that sustainability has always been closely linked with innovation at their company. During the energy crisis of the 1970s, they developed FLRY—a vehicle cable with a reduced outer diameter—in response to dwindling resources, which then became the industry standard.
