BorgWarner supplies Polestar with electric torque vectoring and disconnect system for its BEV SUVs

BorgWarner has introduced its first-to-market electric Torque Vectoring and Disconnect (eTVD) system for battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

The eTVD system, currently in production on the Polestar 3 SUV, is part of BorgWarner’s electric torque management system (eTMS) solutions portfolio. The system is designed to intelligently control wheel torque, enhancing stability, dynamic performance, and traction during launch and acceleration. Production for an additional major European OEM is expected to commence later this year.

The eTVD system replaces the differential and features both torque vectoring and an on-demand disconnect function. Unlike brake-based systems, torque vectoring prevents unnecessary brake interventions, reducing harshness and vibration. This results in less wear and tear on brakes and tires, and lower particle emissions. BorgWarner’s eTVD systems offer high-level software and controls that can be customized by OEMs to align with their platform needs and specific brand characteristics.

Despite the higher weight of BEVs potentially reducing agility, BorgWarner’s eTVD systems enable a lighter feel of the vehicle while increasing overall safety. The system’s smart design and intuitive software minimize the risk of undesired driving characteristics and ensure superior traction regardless of road and weather conditions. The torque response is instantaneous in challenging and demanding scenarios, ensuring smooth, safe rides.
