Blue Solutions and Foxconn developing solid-state batteries

Blue Solutions, a solid-state battery maker, has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) and its battery material design subsidiary SolidEdge Solution Inc., to develop a solid-state battery ecosystem for the electric two-wheeler market, and may also adapt to other EVs.

They plan to co-develop batteries using Blue Solutions’ proprietary solid-state cell technology, “Gen4 Technology“, and SolidEdge Solution’s materials.

The collaboration will initially focus on the Indonesian market. McKinsey estimates that the global two-wheeled vehicle market will be worth approximately $218 billion by 2029, with a CAGR of 8.7%. The primary growth driver is expected to be electric motorcycles. The goal is to increase the number of electric motorcycles to 13 million by 2030.

Blue Solutions, a French company, has been producing solid-state batteries since 2011, with research dating back to the 1980s. The company is the only producer of solid-state cells, modules, and packs, with production lines in France and Canada. To date, the Bolloré group has invested €3 Billion in Blue Solutions, resulting in over 3 million cells delivered to the market.

Founded in 2021, SolidEdge Solution, a Foxconn subsidiary, is developing battery materials in Taiwan. The aim is to develop common materials for each of the main components of a battery cell.

Richard Bouveret, President and CEO of Blue Solutions, said, “This memorandum of understanding with Foxconn is a key step in Blue Solutions’ strategy of forging strong partnerships to expand internationally. Foxconn represents a partner of choice to address together the future two-wheeler market in Asia and set up very ambitious targets for mobility.”

Troy Wu, Head of battery strategy at Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn), stated, “Battery is the heart of electric vehicles, and solid-state batteries is the ultimate goal for the rapid development of electric vehicles! Foxconn and Blue Solutions hope to accelerate the development of solid-state battery solutions that meet market demand and offer prime performance for our EV customers going forward to achieve the strategic goals of time-to-cost and time-to-market.”
