The Biden-Harris Administration has launched the first electric vehicle (EV) fast charging stations in the United States, funded through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program.
This initiative is a key part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, which allocates $5 billion over five years to create jobs through the development of a reliable EV charging infrastructure. The plan includes the installation of charging stations at least every 50 miles on highways. Since President Biden’s inauguration, EV sales have tripled, private investment has surged, and the number of publicly available charging ports has increased by 70%. This progress is propelling America toward the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of establishing a national network of 500,000 public EV charging ports by 2030.
The new charging stations will address gaps in charging, increase capacity, and enhance the reliability of the nation’s fast charging network. This will be supplemented by the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program, which provides $2.5 billion in grant funds to strategically deploy publicly accessible EV charging and alternative fueling infrastructure in communities.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy through the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation worked with all 50 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, to strategically design an EV charging network that supports local and regional needs while covering the length and breadth of America’s roads.
