STMicroelectronics’ new bidirectional current-sense amplifiers for EV battery management systems and inverters

STMicroelectronics has released its TSC2020 bidirectional current-sense amplifier.

It’s designed with 100V-tolerant inputs and an internally fixed gain, ensuring high accuracy and eliminating the need for external components typically required for protection and gain-setting configuration. The product is suitable for a variety of applications, including servers, power tools, industrial motor control, and power supplies.

The TSC2020 is AEC-Q100 qualified, making it suitable for automotive applications such as motor-controlled window lifters, battery management systems (BMS), and traction inverters. The amplifier is suitable for high-side or low-side current sensing and has a wide common-mode voltage range from -4V to 100V, allowing its use in 48V systems and at higher voltages.

The TSC2020’s precision internal circuitry ensures an input offset voltage within ±150µV, which significantly reduces the size of the external shunt resistor, thereby lowering power dissipation. The amplifier’s ability to sense very low drop voltages minimizes measurement errors. It also offers a common-mode rejection of at least 100dB, ensuring consistent accuracy when exposed to fluctuating common-mode voltages in applications such as inline motor control.

The TSC2020 also features enhanced PWM rejection, ensuring high immunity to noise in motor drives and switched-mode power converters. The fixed gain of 20V/V ensures high accuracy and stability with a 0.3% gain error and 3.5ppm/°C drift. No trimming is required.

The TSC2020 is now in mass production and is available in a choice of SO8 and Mini SO8 packages. Pricing starts at $1.20 for 1000 units, and free samples are available from the ST eStore. Both industrial and automotive-grade versions are part of ST’s 10-years longevity program, ensuring long-term product availability.
