Tata Group has announced plans to construct the U.K.’s largest automotive battery gigafactory through its global battery subsidiary, Agratas.
The gigafactory will be located near Bridgwater, Somerset, in proximity to Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) vehicle production plants in the Midlands.
Agratas will invest £4 billion ($5.1 billion) into the construction of the plant on a brownfield site, previously a Royal Ordnance Factory until its decommissioning in 2008. This marks the first Tata Group gigafactory to be established outside of India. The company will occupy about half of the available land on the site.
The new plant is projected to create 4,000 jobs and stimulate thousands more in the supply chain. Vehicle battery-pack production is scheduled to commence in 2026. By the end of the decade, the plant is expected to produce nearly half of the anticipated vehicle battery requirements of the U.K.’s auto industry. The plant’s estimated annual production capacity is 40GWh of battery cells, sufficient to supply approximately 500,000 passenger vehicles.
