MAHLE Powertrain has inaugurated a new battery development center in Stuttgart, Germany.
The facility, which spans over 1,300 m2, is equipped to handle all aspects of battery development, from initial prototyping to small-scale production. The center’s capabilities range from applications for small e-bikes to large electric trucks. This new facility complements the company’s vehicle and battery development center in Northampton, UK, which was opened last year.
The Stuttgart facility includes a fully-featured prototype shop that houses a state-of-the-art dual-robot laser welding station capable of handling active HV battery modules. The center also features a comprehensive test department, which can test low- and high-voltage packs up to a maximum of 1200V, 2000A, or 550kW. It incorporates two climatic chambers that operate from ‑40°C to +90°C for a full scope of aging, electrical, and thermal tests. The facility can also replicate simulated driving cycles in harsh environments, while self-extinguishing workbenches and water drop tanks ensure the highest standards of safety.

We have designed the facility with future expansion in mind, with additional services and increased capacity already in the planning stages.”
